Sometimes the canvas has a mind of it's own.
I learned the beauty of a messy wash in high school at a week long oil painting intensive. The hallmark of the demoing artist was her loose, expressive brushwork, letting the strokes speak for themselves.
My little perfectionist heart struggles to let go of the details in the later stages, but in that first wash? There are no rules. I dilute the paint in turpenoid, sop up as much as I can with the brush, and let the drips fall where they may.
The original plan was to use this canvas for a landscape, but as the vibrant transparent red oxide wash took shape, I just couldn't do it. It was too beautiful to cover!
Thus "Talk to the Tail" was born. I wanted a subject matter that had as much movement and intensity as the wash. This spirited horse was just that. The contrasting warm reds and cool blues balance each other, and the graphic white outline makes sure the horse is the main event.
